Confess Your Sin
by Anika Jones
Proverbs 28:13 -Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Unrepentant sin is a great way to self-sabotage. It is so easy to become prideful and think we can outsmart God and try to conceal our sins. It makes little sense to think we can hide our sins from an all-seeing God. Remember the Genesis 3 scenario with Adam and Eve? Sewing fig leaves and trying to hide from God didn’t quite work for them, and it sure won’t work for us. The word is very clear. if we conceal our sins, WE WILL NOT PROSPER! Doing all the right Christian things, such as giving of our time, talent, and treasure, does not exempt us from the consequences of unconfessed sin. David says it best in Psalm 51:17: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
As believers, we will go through seasons of difficulties-this is a promise! But suffering in Christ is redemptive. However, there is a difference when our suffering is self-inflicted because of unconfessed sins. We then set ourselves up to be resisted by God and we will not prosper!
“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble! “James 4:6
It takes humility to confess your sins before God and others. We all like being seen in a good light, and it is not always easy to confess our sins. But in the kingdom, this act of humility is mandatory. We are not only required to confess our sins, but we are also called to renounce it. This means we reject it all together, no pet sins allowed! This is true repentance. There is a reward on the other side of confession. We will gain mercy. Instead of condemnation, we get mercy. What a significant exchange!
If you are reading this and are dealing with hidden sins, I encourage you to confess it to God and others. You don’t have to continue to hold on to the guilt and shame. You are so loved, and God wants you to be free!
Psalm 32:5
Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave
the guilt of my sin.
