The Prayer of Silence – A Fasting Devotional
From: Natalie Maglaris
“Be still and know that I am God”
Psalm 46:10
Psalm 46:10
There’s a lot of noise these days both inside my house and out. For those of you who don’t know, I just got a puppy and I have 3 small children. It can get pretty loud in my house. Sneaking away to the bathroom, so I can get on social media was a way I could escape the constant demands of motherhood. However, a few scrolls in…it doesn’t take long before I’m bombarded and overwhelmed with all things going on in the world today. So today after I put my kids to sleep. I sat down in silence and focused my awareness on the presence of God.
Jeanne Guyon talks about this type of prayer in her book “Experiencing the depths of Jesus Christ.” She calls it the prayer of silence. She says, “to engage in ‘the prayer of silence’ does not mean that you cease all action. Instead, it means your soul acts by the moving of your spirit.”
I invite you to walk away from the noise. Find some time each day to engage in the prayer of silence. Allow Him to meet you in the secret place.
Here are some practical steps:
Find a quiet space, take a seat and quiet your mind.
Close your eyes and take relaxing deep breaths.
Focus your mind on the presence of God.
As you quiet your mind, let the Spirit lead you and sink in.
Let your prayer be silent, without the need for thoughts or words.
Stay there as long as you like
