How Do You Know God is Speaking? – A Fasting Devotional
From: Yesenia Menjivar
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN GOD IS SPEAKING? It is a question I’ve heard time and time again. It is a question I asked myself even years after coming to the Lord. It was in those moments that my mind would take off on a whirlwind of thoughts. And if I wasn’t careful, the enemy was sure to have his way.
It was 9 years ago my first born came into this world. After 6 weeks of precious maternity leave bonding with my son, I returned to work. Yet, in the middle of my work day I found myself in tears for being apart from my son trying to escape my office and colleagues. I was changing; motherhood will do that to you.
One Sunday morning after service, my husband and I were so moved by the message that was given. So much so that when we arrived at the car, we both looked at each other and agreed it was time for me to stay at home with our son to help cultivate the presence of the Lord in our home and establish a strong foundation in the Lord for our family. Thus, after working 7 years with my corporation, I resigned.
I had no idea the adventure that was about to happen next out of the obedience of my heart. Thank you, Jesus.
Naturally babies need a lot of sleep to grow and my son was truly a napper. Most days he would take a 3 1/2 hour nap and during that time I would do my own growing, in my spirit. I began a healthy habit of worship, reading the word, and PRAYER.
I often refer to this season as my honeymoon with Jesus. We can speak of our relationship with Jesus in a very tangible, intimate, and personal way because Jesus is just that: so very intimate and personal with us. He doesn’t play hard to get! In fact, God wants us to know Him as Father, Jesus as Savior, and the Holy Spirit as teacher. The author and finisher of our faith has a way of leading us into these seasons of direction and deeper intimacy with Him, but we must be willing to say “I trust you.”
Further, it is in this intentional lifestyle of prayer that God will demonstrate His true nature through His son, Jesus Christ. The more time you spend with a person, the more you get to know them. The more time we spend with Jesus, the more we are able to discern the voice of God and “demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” –2 Corinthians 10:5
Consequently, prayer is not solely a time we come to the Lord with our troubles–though He is faithful to abide in us–it is an act of love. It is an act of communion. Beloved, may we become so lovesick in our relationship with Jesus that prayer is no longer an option, but a means to live and love.
Amen.
